There is a small but vocal group of placenta encapsulators who insist that working in the mother's home is the "only safe way" to prepare a placenta. We have asked for facts to support this stance; the two big ideas that were provided were the biome and a mother's security that she is getting her own placenta back. We would like to address those concerns and explain how and why we use our process.
Benefits to Using Our Workspace
We work in Melissa's home. A quarter of her kitchen becomes "Placenta Land” and is completely off limits when a placenta is in process. She has a large kitchen and can easily accommodate this space usage.
Our logic for using our space includes these reasons. Not every reason is going to be of importance to every family, but there are many factors to consider.
Storage and Transportation
The storage and transporting of the placenta is also a source of worry for us. When we work in our space, we pick up the placenta during normal business hours, soon after birth. We bring our own cooler and ice packs to keep the placenta safe until we get it to our work area. If the placenta is to stay with mom until she is released then we have these concerns:
"The Safest" Method
Claiming that in-client-home encapsulation is "the safest” fails to acknowledge these factors:
Concerning the biome:
One must ask why an encapsulator might act unprofessionally? It was surprising to us to even hear this was a concern; it would have never crossed our minds to swap, steal, or use unsafe methods. We offer this service because we want to help new families while adding meaningful income to our families. Hurting the industry by using improper and unscrupulous practices would hurt both of those reasons we do this. Leaving integrity out of the equation, there simply isn't even a benefit to acting improperly. It would simply be bad business. What exactly would an encapsulator do with your placenta if she switched it? What would she do with pills if she stole them? If there is a black market for placenta pills, we are unaware (and happy to remain so).
We are professionals who remain so even if no one is watching. We have both worked in fields that have required background checks and passed with flying colors. We believe our integrity is part of our core person; we would not trade it for anything. Our goal as mothers and professionals is to help families in any way we can; this is why we have gone to such lengths to offer so many services to help families be strong and healthy - from childbirth and parenting education to car seat checks and so much more.
